999 Call for Riomay
Riomay Solar Heating, one of the UK's leading solar thermal suppliers, has won the contract with the London Fire Brigade to install solar thermal heating at six of its fire stations. Riomay's professional expertise in the field of solar thermal technology, together with their competitive pricing, helped them win the contract.
The project is part of a huge new phase in the LFB's green programme which will help cut its carbon footprint by 1,900 tonnes from 1990 levels. In addition to the solar thermal installations by Riomay the LFB is installing other renewable energy solutions including wind turbines.
Discussions are already underway to supply a further 20 stations with renewable technologies. Val Shawcross, Chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, which manages LFB, said: "This is more great news for the Authority and I hope it will act as a spur to other organisations to start blazing the green trail. "We take our responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint very seriously. We have some way to go before we can say we are a truly sustainable organisation, but are making big strides and remain committed to supporting the battle against climate change."
Fire stations use high volumes of hot water and the move is part of the London Fire Brigade's renewable energy strategy. There are 112 stations in London which are manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Crews invariably need a hot shower when they return from a "shout" and there is also high demand for hot water in the station kitchens. Riomay's advanced solar thermal technology will help reduce the Authority's carbon footprint and its energy bills.
The company's Managing Director Tony Book, who is Chairman of the International Solar Energy Society, says this is the first 999 call the company has answered: "We have provided systems for almost every other kind of authority in the UK from local councils and health authorities to HM Prisons. All the emergency services use vast amounts of hot water and we are delighted that the LFB have recognised Riomay's expertise in this area."
Riomay specialises in the design and installation of evacuated tube solar heating. Based on the South Coast of England, the company has been responsible for some of the largest solar installations around the UK and Europe. In 2006 the company was voted Installer of the Year in the South East Renewable Energy Awards.
The company's innovative approach to cost effective solar heating solutions has won them contracts at ground-breaking developments such as the Eco Centre at Burnham Beeches and Ropetackle, a regeneration development at Shoreham, East Sussex, a partnership project between Berkeley Homes and the South East England Development Agency.
